N C Daw and Co.
After shifting to Kolkata, the area where the Daw family resided was home to many an old Zamindar family at the peak of their grandeur at that point of time. While still expanding the existing family business of spices, Narasingha Chandra Daw's interest was piqued to see a British officer or a zamindar family pass by. What specially drew his interest were the durbans and accomplices carrying locally made guns and spears and that's when he came up with the idea of starting a business for which there was a huge existing clientele.
Owing to the goodwill developed over the time due to the family business and contacts with British officials, Narasingha Chandra Daw could manage to acquire a business permit for selling ingredients necessary to support this trade. He started his business of selling gunpowder, sulphur, and saltpeter used to run these locally made weapons in 1835 from a shop at 22, Chandni Chowk. The office of N C Daw and Co shifted to its present Dalhousie office in the 1890 and since then it has been successfully operating from its present location.
Understanding the need to decentralize the business, shops were opened at Ranchi, Raniganj in around 1931 and this was spread successively to Asansol, Dhanbad, Hazaribag, Koderma, Howrah, Burdwan, Jamshedpur, Cuttack and other locations that were found conducive for the business. The main store that has been in Dalhousie since the start, proudly reads "Nursing Chunder Daw & Co."
